Dr. Branka Niemann

Branka Niemann was born and raised in Germany, where she studied economics and earned a doctorate from the University of Heidelberg.

While still a student in the early 1990′s, she became jointly responsible for the introduction of the new liberalized tax system in Croatia, and worked as a tax consultant to the government.

Dr. Niemann became a scientific member of the Economic Research Center at the University in Heidelberg (Heidelberger Steuervilla) and focused her studies on international tax law, devoting her dissertation to the treatment and avoidance of double taxation.

On completing her studies, Dr. Niemann was employed by one of the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms to work in Croatia. In 2005 she decided to establish her own consulting firm UBLI savjetovanje d.o.o. (today UBLI porezno savjetovanje d.o.o.) in Zagreb, with the goal of offering clients a more individualised service.

Today, Dr. Niemann is considered one of the foremost tax experts in Croatia, particularly with regard to international tax issues.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rainer Niemann

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rainer Niemann is a German citizen. From 1993 until 1997 he studied Business Research with a major in Business Taxation at the University of Bielefeld. After completing his studies he moved to the University of Tübingen to work as a research assistant at the chair of Business Taxation (Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Franz W. Wagner). In 2000, he received his PhD. For his doctoral thesis, Dr. Niemann received the dissertation award of the Schitag Foundation (currently Ernst & Young Foundation) and the award of Nürnberger Steuergespräche e.V.

In 2004, Dr. Niemann completed his habilitation (2nd doctoral degree in German-language countries), also at the University of Tübingen. Since October 2004, he is Professor at the University of Graz and director of the Institute of Accounting and Taxation. Since 2006, Prof. Niemann is also deputy chaiman of the Center for Accounting Research at the University of Graz. He declined further offers for professorships at Dresden University of Technology and at the Humboldt-University in Berlin.

Prof. Niemann’s main research interests are international taxation, taxation and investment, and taxation and financing decision. He published numerous articles in high-ranking academic journals. In 2004, he received the best paper award of the German Academic Association for Business Research for an international journal publication. In 2006, Prof. Niemann was elected department editor accounting of the academic journal „Business Research“.
